Ruger M77 Mark II Target ?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MILDOT : One Thread

Does anyone here have experience with this rifle or know anything about it? I'm specifically interested in the 22/250.

My basic situation is that I'm shopping for my first varmint rifle. I currently play around with a Ruger .22 but want something better. The Ruger is in my price range of around $700. I've also been recommended Savage varmint rifles.

So, how good of a choice would this gun be?

I have a Ruger M 77 Mark II target. It is chambered in 223 at a 100 yards I can easily shoot 1" groups. I have shot rock chucks as far as 335 yards. At a shooting range with good conditions I have shoot 4" groups at 400 yards. My gun is out of the box no gunsmith work has been done. There are alot of good varmint guns out there pick one you like and can afford.

I'm an Alaskan Inupiaq (Eskimo) and owned my first rifle when I was six so I've hunted with just about every animal there is and with all kinds of calibers. It's in my nature to hunt and I need a dependable firearm because it can mean the difference between life and death up here. No canned hunts here among my people. I bought a M77 Mark II 22- 250 stainless steel and used it for everything including caribou, moose, seal, fox, rabbits, wolves and and brown bear. The name varminter doesn't give it justice. I recommend this caliber and a 243. Simple to clean and maintain.

You can load 1 at a time w/the model 77 mkII target, i have one in 22-250 and i love it, its a great shooter, but since i use it in maine where most of the hunting is woods/small fields, i dont use it much for coyotes, b/c of its size/weight and the 6-20x44 AO scope. I also bought mine for $425

I have the International version and could not be happier with it, very easy to maintain and a good deer rifle.

If I were you, I would look into buying a CZ 550 varmiter. They have a green laminated stock, bull barrel, and weigh around 8.5 pounds. The trigger system is awesome on these guns, they have a regular 6 pound trigger, but for really long shots you just push the trigger forward and it goes down to 1.5 pounds of pull. I bought mine for $550.00 in a .308 and I love, and I also own a savage 22-250 and love that gun just as much. I hope I could be of some help.

.22-250 Very good choice or a .243

Dont go with the ruger for a varmint rifle. It is a mauser style action (controlled feeding)

When shooting varmints usually you will want a push feed design since you will be loading one at a time.

If you do get the ruger plan on having a gunsmith work it over. Glass bed rifle and first 2" of barrel. True action Rechamber or replace barrel

By the time you get done you could have purchased a used rifle from someone over at the website I posted and not be waiting 3-5months to get your rifle back.

Email if you have any questions
