Sobig Worm

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

For about the last 5 months or so my e-mail has so many messages that it shuts down every day. Like over 150 messages! Even tho I never open any attchments. Anyway so I have just been deleteing all my mail and never sending any out cause I was sure I had that worm and I didn't want to pass it along. Now however everything all the sudden is back to normal??? It seems to have disapeared??

Has anyone else had that happen and do you think its safe to use that e-mail box? Just curious.....Kirk

That's what happened to me too, Kirk. I never opened any attachments either, and I am told that I don't actually have the virus, but was suffering the consequences of some who do anyway. They have stopped now for me too, except for one or two a day.

I recieved 29,015 of those emails so far since august 11. I finally programmed by background system bot to access my accounts every 10 minutes to take a bulk mail count and delete and empty the trash folders. Otherwise my mail is operating normally.

Our internet provider put up a filter which killed quite a few of those stupid e-mails - I keep mine open when I'm in the office, expecting messages. Close my window open my mail to find yet another 'wicked screen save' / You have just won / Viagra ads - ugh, it sure sucked.

Glad to see things have calmed down - maybe get one or two a day still though.

Just thought I'd throw in that I have no idea what Jay said, again, but I wish I had known last week how to do whatever it is he did. :)

The virus was passed from people's address books. Looks like you all have alot of friends. I use a small server and they closed up for a little while trying to clean up the bottleneck they got.

Microsoft said that as long as you are not thrown off the net, you don't have the worm but suggested that I update my virus shield.

Well I wonder how many people are mad at me for not answering my mail? I'm glad I asked. Now I feel better about useing my e-mail again. These guys that do these virises and worms ought to spend some time in jail! Or 3 months with my mother-in-law!!!! Ha!....Kirk

Stepping out of the shadows . . .

These sort of problems are one major reason I do not use my regular email address. This is a separate web-based email. And it is being bombarded with these stupid messages. I can't even block them because they come from different "people" all the time. I probably will set up blocks/filters for "my details" "details" wicked screensaver" etc.

Sad to say, JR, that I got one of them from "you" -- one of the first ones. I don't know how the heck I am getting most of them though. That address should not be in the files of anyone except BTS and maybe a few old Countryside folks who don't clean out their files very often. JR was the only name I recognized though!

Julie and I are lucky in that we're both still running Windows 98SE rather than the newer operating systems. These virus/bug/worm/things are not written for those, apparently.

Sigh. Why don't these juvenile morons GROW UP!?!?! I confess to wishing very bad things to happen to them -- like explosions in their computer rooms. Grrrrrr.
