Not much that's better for getting warm than a pile of quilts. Quilts can be plain or fancy. Some of the warmest beds I've slept were made with a simple tied quilt of a wool blanket with a plain fabric top and backing. This site has many wonderul quilt pictures to look at:
Ooh Quilts!

Those are beautiful quilts at that site! I remember reading an article several years ago, concerning quilt making and the author made the statement "just do it" :-). I found a quilting frame at a garage sale and I finally took her statement to heart and finished my first quilt last year. It was just a patchwork quilt made of scraps of flannel (each one holds a memory because I can remember the shirt they came from) and I only tacked the backing but I finally "did" it. I made it full size, for our oldest son and was very happy with the way it turned out. You're are right too, there is nothing better for getting warm! This winter I am going to tack another quilt. I didn't make the top but it is very pretty and will be SO warm. I found the quilt top at a garage sale. The blocks are made from a lot of different colors of corduory and I'm putting gray corduory on as the backing.
