Well, I am guessing that your teacher has in mind Poe's adolescent crush on Mrs. Jane Stith Stanard, mother of a school chum, who encouraged Poe in his literary aspirations. Poe's later poem "To Helen" is a tribute to her influence. Mother figure, literary Muse, ideal yet unattainable love, tragic death just over a year after meeting her, beautiful, in sum just about everything Poe idealized to set him on his particular poetic path at his most impressionable age.
