Mars

greenspun.com : LUSENET : FRL friends : One Thread

Just thought I'd post a note in case anyone has missed all the hype about Mars lately.

Through August and September the red planet's orbit brings it closer than it has been for thousands of years. It is beautiful at the moment and will be at it's best around 27-30th August.

I've read that even with a small telescope we should be able to see surface markings and a polar cap.

I don't know how good a view you'd get in the Nthn. Hemisphere, my star guide is written especially for Oz. Hope you get to see it.

Mars will be visible here too. It's the closest it has been in decades!

Oooooo. The Martians are coming....that gives me a story idea......I'm beginning to get psyched up.....or psyched down, or psyched out, or maybe I'm just Psych - o

Oh that's beautiful Gayla. So much better than the view I've been getting through the fogged up lense of my very weak, shaky telescope.

I don't know how good a view you are getting, but over here Mars is as bright as Venus usually is in our summer skies. We are very lucky to live a long way from any cities, so we have good dark skies with the whole Milky Way stretched out overhead.

C'mon Rob. If you write a story, Aunt Bee is sure to make fudge. Have pity. It's still cold over here and I can't even use my darkroom because I can't keep the chemicals up to temp.

Ok. I'll try and come up with something soon. I miss that fudge as much as anyone!

Wow..that is some beautiful picture! :) Pass the fudge, Beazer!

OK - Is Mars, like, you know, closer to bottom of the earth down there?

Or is it closer to the real (topside up) side?

Or, um, is Mars, just a bar????

-- Aunt Bee (Aunt__Bee@hotmail.com), September 04, 2003.

Chocolate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Hey ... You were the one bringing up Mars bars....

I don't know about being closer Robert, maybe the earth's tilt is just favouring us this time.

Aunt Bee, you are having an effect on me. I now have a supply of chocolates on my computer desk because everytime I visit here I crave something sweet.

Hi Kritter. Gayla's pic is great isn't it? Makes me want to visit one of those observatories with the big telescopes. I'll have to put it on my wish list.

LOL Carol! At least I am having an effect on someone!

Cleary you can see in the upper left hand corner on the right side near the middle, a battery of tanks and some small grey men with machine guns, and a series of one way streets leading to the pyramids. Also I think I see a Walmart, but that might just be a reflection. :/

Lol Kritter. I think the small grey men are laughing at us.
