what is the best twist rate for an accurate rifle with a 30 inch heavy barrel.

remember, velocity never killed anything that didn't step out in front of it. in a .308, what you want is a barrel length/weight with a rate of twist that will consistently launch a 168 gr. hpbt match round, down range at 2550-2600 fps, and consistently group 1 moa or better. my pet rifle is a Remington 40-X with a 26" barrel with a 1 in 10 rate of twist. it shoots factory match ammo into 1/2 moa all day long. good luck.

just because it's long and heavy dont make it accurate,up to a point you will gain a little velocity with each inch of barrel length,but it is not a lot,and velocity is not the holy grail,if the bullet is not stabilized it dont matter how fast it,s going,you are not going to hit much,for a accurate rifle you must have a lot of things right,barrel length,twist rate,a stiff enough recevier to keep the bolt square,you must have a square and trued bolt that locks tight,the chamber must be done right, the action must be beded right, the barrel must be floated or beded properly,a clean crisp trigger,and even the way the stock fits you affects accurcy,then you have sights and ammo thrown in,and thats not evey thing,it depends on how much you are expecting from your rifle,is 1moa good enough?or do you want.5" or .25" or less, to get there you have to get almost everything right,i sold one of my bench rifles that shot .25" at 100 but that wont win,and almost all of these rifles are 26" or less,there is no one thing that will make it,it is a whole long and costly line of things to be done to get the most you can out of a rifle, $3000 is just a starting point, but if 1moa is good enough and it is for most things, it can be had for a whole lot less,think about what you honestly need of it and go from there,bobby

i no its a long barrel but i want the best accuracy possible.i am going to get a 308 win and i was thinking a 1 in 10 twist would be good. I see you know more about this stuff than me so whats your opinion.thanks bobby

30" heavy barrel? do you have a rifle or a howitzer?twist rate depends mostly on bullet weight and length and speed ,the faster the twist the heavier the bullet can be,ex. a 7 or 8 twist will handle a 77 gr .223 rd. while that would be to fast for a 40gr rd. it cold cause the jacket to seperate from the core,for this round(40)you would want a slower twist 9 or 10 or possibly slower,there are exceptions and each firearm and barrel are differant,josh i dont think you need anything over a 26"barrel,jmho,bobby
