St Bridget of Sweden's Prayers & Promises

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

I have read that the 15 Prayers of Happiness given to St Bridget & the Promises attached are not genuine?, that they have never been approved by the Vatican ?. What is the truth, does anyone know ? Also, does this mean that the Prayers attributed to St Bridget involving 7 Our Fathers & 7 Hail Marys to be said for 12 years with the promise of avoidance of Purgatory is also not genuine? I had been saying these Prayers & now i am left out on a limb as i am not sure what is what, & whether i am wasting my time or not. Either way i know that the Prayers will stand before God, so that part is not a waste, but what about the promises ?

Response to St Bridget of Swedens Prayers & Promises

Hey John :)

This is not from any point of authority, just from l'il me -

If you truly believe (as you stated) "the Prayers will stand before God" then you shouldn't worry too much about anything else. The Word of God has some MAJOR Promises to offer you - why don't you read, re- read & use all of them to the hilt! I assure you that if you do, you won't be worried about anything else (a Word even tells us of the futility of worrying!).

God bless,

Response to St Bridget of Swedens Prayers & Promises

Padre Pio said, "Time spent in prayer, is never wasted time."

I got this from a website (please note re the promises):

In this place (reference to a photo of the ruined abbey - SP note) St. Bridget obtained in 1346 the 15 Prayers about the Passion of the Lord. However the Magnificent Promises to these Prayers were given to St. Bridget in the Church of St. Paul (San Paolo fuori le mura) at Rome.

The Holy Father Pope Pius IX has approved the Prayers and the Promises of St. Bridget May 31, 1862 for the benefit of the humanity and for the good of souls.

God bless Sam

I am one week into the Saint Bridget prayers. Only 51 more to go. Can I pray that I will not miss a day for the next 51 weeks? :-) I am praying especially for the conversion of my brother. Has anyone else here ever prayed this devotion?

THE SAINT BRIDGET PRAYERS The 21 Promises of the St. Bridget Prayers

For a long time, St. Bridget wanted to know the number of wounds Our Lord received during His Passion. He one day appeared to her and said, “I received 5480 blows on My Body. If you wish to honor them in some way, say 15 Our Fathers and 15 Hail Marys with the following Prayers (which He taught her) for a whole year. When the year is up, you will have honored each one of My Wounds.” Our Lord made the following promises to anyone who recited the 15 St. Bridget Prayers for a whole year:

1: I will deliver 15 souls of his lineage from Purgatory. 2: 15 souls of his lineage will be confirmed and preserved in Grace. 3: 15 sinners of his lineage will be converted. 4: Whoever recites these Prayers will attain the first degree of perfection. 5: 15 days before his death, I will give him My Precious Body in order that he may escape eternal starvation; I will give him My Precious Blood to drink lest he thirst eternally. 6: 15 days before his death he will feel a deep contrition for all his sins and will have a perfect knowledge of them. 7: I will place before him the Sign of My Victorious Cross for his help and defense against the attack of his enemies. 8: Before his death, I shall come with My Dearest Beloved Mother. 9: I shall graciously receive his soul and will lead it into Eternal Joys. 10: And having led it there I shall give him a special draught from the Fountain of My Deity, something I will not for those who have not recited My Prayers. 11: Let it be known that whoever may have been living in a state of mortal sin for 30 years, but who will recite devoutly, or have the intention to recite these Prayers, The Lord will forgive him all his sins. 12: I shall protect him from strong temptations. 13: I shall preserve and guard his 5 senses. 14: I shall preserve him from a sudden death. 15: His soul will be delivered form eternal death. 16: He will obtain all he asks for from God and the Blessed Virgin. 17: If he has lived all his life doing his own will and he is to die the next day, his life will be prolonged. 18: Every time one recites these Prayers he gains 100 days indulgence. 19: He is assured of being joined to the Supreme Choir of Angels. 20: Whoever teaches these Prayers to another will have continuous joy and merit which will endure eternally. 21: There where these Prayers are being said or will be said in the future, God is present with His Grace.

Hi, Brian

The St.Briget prayers are very beautiful prayers. I have prayed them many, many times. I am a BIG fan of this beautiful saint. It is true that pope Pius IX approved these prayers but the promises are not approved by the pope or by the Church. In fact, we are told by the Church not to believe them and they even mentioned the little St. Bridget booklet.

There would be no doubt that you can pray these prayers for your brother, because they are very holy prayers, but the promises are not real.

I looked for an older thread for you where this was, but than I rembered it was deleted by the "mad deleter" because he posted on this thread.

I will rember your brother in my prayers.

David,

I thought that the promises weren't approved either, but then I did a google search to research it and this thread came up. I had missed it before. I read Sam's post and was happy to hear what he said. But alas, I guess he was wrong. Oh well, I will continue the prayers anyway. Thanks David!

Brian,

You're welcome. Please keep saying the prayers because as you know they are very intense prayers on our Lords passion. Maybe John G. will post that information again in forum one day about what the Church said on the promises? It was very interesting reading.

Also, I read that in private revalations that St. Bridget mentioned the Blessed Mother died in a field surrounded by angels. But, we know the Church doesn't teach us this one way or the other.

God bless you

Dear Friends of Christ,

I too have said these prayers and all I can say is that I believe they helped me to become more fervent in my faith. When I look back and wonder what helped me through the times of many trials I remembered that it may have been the result of this. All I did was to pray these 15 prayers for one year with faith and let the Lord handle it according to His Divine Will. The graces received were beyond my human comprehension. Hope this will encourage those who love to pray these prayers. God Bless, Ramanie.

Dear Faithful (especially Ramanie), Your faith in these prayers is inspiring. I have been saying these prayers for 5 months now, and find them to bring peace. Ramanie, I am also inspired by your witness to God's goodness and glory given to those who trust and remain faithful. I am trusting that God will rewared and bless me by reparing a relationship (if it is his will). God Bless you all. Jennifer

Dear Friends of Christ (specially Jennifer),

God has chosen us to be born to endure this challenging era of this turbulent and chaiotic world for a purpose. All the messages and events point us towards one focus PRAYER. So I feel we should endeaver to do just that by going for Holy Mass and Confession as often as you can, praying as many Rosaries and Divine Mercy Chaplets as you can, offering all our actions to our Lord, praying for the Holy Souls in Purgarory and whatever other prayers that the Holy Spirit inspires us (as the 15 prayers and promises of St Bridget when I was 20 years old). This followed by a love for one another and bear witness to Christ is all we need to do because what is happenening in the church and the world cannot be ever rectified by human beings as we are fighting a great Spiritual Battle. So we go to the only source we can and that is to God our Father through prayer in obedience to His Divine Will.

Thank you Jennifer for your encouraging words. God Bless You All, Ramanie.
