Hi, I want to know whether Pioneer VS55 recognizes the SVCD format and does it play SVCD. I am having problems playing SVCD on my pioneer vs55 player.

Most Pioneer DVD players support SVCD, but some do not. Your player is not listed in the DVD Player Compatibility List at http://www.vcdhelp.com. Are you sure about the model? If you got the model wrong and it's something like XR-VS55, you can look at the web site I listed. Your owner's manual may tell you if it supports the format or not. If it's a VCD player and not a DVD player, it won't support SVCD.
