Our founding fathers declared the "Authority of the Holy Scriptures" in Article 5 and 6 of our Articles of Religion. Therefore if you can determine when the Articles of Religion was adopted that would be the date you seek.

Thank you Rev Paris for the reminder of the Articles of Religion. That reminds us that the theology of our Zion is Methodism. Our founder Richard Allen elected to stay with Methodism because it was clear and easily understood by our people at the time. The AME Church was esatablished in response to DISCRIMINATION not a difference in theology as most denomination are. The Articles of Religion are the Articles as presented by John Wesley back in the 1700's. So the answer to Brother Gray the date, technically, may be April, 1816 at a General Conference called to form a Connection (Doctrine and Discipline of the AME Church, pg 9)

The earliest iscipline I have is 1976, which gives a treatie on "Rules for Giving" that was repeated until the 1988 discipline. In the concluding comments, Point 2 rfers to tithing, and observes that there is no New testament contrversion to that approach.

From the 1992 discipline on, the church begins its section on Stewardship declaring that Tithing is the sought-after method of giving at the local level.
