how many annulments

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

My husband is a Catholic and I am his 4th wife. He has had 2 annulments already and wants to get the third and for me (a non catholic) to get an annulment from my first marriage. Its seems a little hipacritical to me. I mean how many marriages can he annul? It is very important to him to be able to take communion and be buried in a Catholic cemetary with his family. But I am very stressed about having to go through an annulment when neither my first husband or I were Catholic. ( I was baptised in the Methodist church after 10 years of marriage).

Question asked: "How many marriages can he annul?"

Answer: None. No one can "annul" a valid marriage.

Correct question to ask: "How many Declarations of Nullity can a person receive after having entered invalidly attempted to marry on each wedding day?"

Answer: Theoretically, no limit.

I would question the reasons for his three divorces. I am engaged to a man that has also been divorced three times which would make me wife number four. Does my fiancee have to all of his first three marriages annuled and if so by whom? He is not Catholic so if it has to be done with a Catholic Priest why is that? I have started to annull my second marriage for the past 7 years. I do not want to lose my sacraments if I marry this man outside of the church. Must he become Catholic for us to marry in my church and for me to still get all of my remaining sacraments and communion?

Yes he does have to have all three annuled by a Marriage Tribunal of your Diocese.

It has to be done by a Catholic Marriage Tribunal because if one partner of a failed marriage wishes to marry a Catholic, he must have the presumption of validity of his union overturned by the competent Catholic authority.

I have started to annull my second marriage for the past 7 years. I do not want to lose my sacraments if I marry this man outside of the church.

It is not just about loosing certain Sacrements but loosing your eternal soul that you should be worried about if you proceed with the marriage without the annulment.

Must he become Catholic for us to marry in my church and for me to still get all of my remaining sacraments and communion?

No, he doesn't have to become a Catholic to marry you but you must promise to try with all your power to raise your children in the Catholic faith. But as i said, you both must first get your marriages annuled by the Catholic Church for this to happen.
