What process does an avi file go through with tmpgemc and nero to be put on a dvd-r?

I'm kind of a noobie when it comes to this kind of stuff...I'm clueless, PLEASE explain the process an avi format movie must take in order to be put on a dvd-r. In terms a 15 year old could understand. Am i missing a program or something?

Go to http://www.vcdhelp.com and start reading everything you can find. DVD expects MPEG-2 video in certain frame rates and resolutions. AVI files are a completely different video format, so they must be converted.
