Go Kart Gearing

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread

I am trying to find a way to gear my go kart to go faster. I have a 5 hp B&S engine with a centrifugal clutch. The clutch has 12 teeth, my driven sprocket has 72. It currently will go about 20-25 MPH. I had an idea to somehow use gears from a bike on my gokart. I would have the first drive sprocket(s) attached to my centrifugal clutch. I would have the driven sprocket(s) attached to my live axle. I am curiuos to see if anybody else has tried this. Any tips or recomandations are welcomed. Thanks

I have tried alot of different things to convert a gokart and none worked that good. Finally, When I convert to have gears, I just get a 70cc to 110cc ATC 3-wheeler motor and gearbox. This way, it has 3 or 4 speeds and an automatic clutch all in one! A Honda ATC 110 motor goes for about 75.00 on E-Bay.com. Your top speed on a gokart is about 50-60mph. This is the fastest way to switch over for a dependable setup. You can use a motorcycle engine, but a motorcycle has a manual clutch that will need to be hooked up. Hope this info helps!
