What has happend to America?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Ask Jesus : One Thread

This is not the America I have read in the history books. This is not the America founded by the forefathers. Americans now are just fat, lazy, and greedy. I think America has hit rock bottom when you have fat people suing McDonalds because 'they didn't know their food would make them fat', or suing them because they got burned by putting Hot coffee between their legs because 'they didn't know hot coffee could burn you'. You got people suing the cigarette companies because 'they didn't know sucking on smoke would give them lung cancer'.

It is also sad that Americans care more about the Kobe Bryant case (Go Lakers) than they do about President (cheated into office) Bush lying to the public that has gotten US soldiers and hundreds of innocent Iraqis killed. Oh well, now I guess I will be classified as anti-american.

Oh, this is even worse...ok maybe not but still look at all the trouble people go to oust Gov. Gray Davis out of office. If they didn't want him elected they should have voted in the first place. It's probably those people suing McDonalds that came up with the idea in the first place.

In ancient Rome, athletes were paid high sums of money for their athletic abilities. The superstars were paid with housing and a 100 head of sheep. This was big time money. "Athlete" means "prize seeker". Times haven't changed. The poor man that guards our society with his life makes a small fraction while Cobey wallows in fortunes, women, and fame. All of his current troubles will blow over and the world will once again continue to worship him and others like him. No, things haven't changed.

Consider too the way America came to be. The , so-called , Native Americans who were slaughtered or oppressed. Think about the exploitation of the different ethnic and racial groups in America that constituted the actual backbone of progress and expansion. America has yet to be like the land of "milk and honey", as some claim. What is ideal about America is her ideals, but there has always been a price to pay and a reality we are not absolutely sure of. Oh, talk to Bill Gates or Donald Trump; American is beautiful. Talk to the men and woman who have paid with their lives, not only in wars, in the changing climate of social, economic, and political unjustices. Ah, but at least we are free. At least, we are not hungry. At least, we can pray.

We are not really free.

Bill Gates is free. He is a 21st Century "Prime Mover". He speaks; the world listens. If he were a holy man, he could part the oceans. Bill Gates is free. We are a little bit free.

Yep, hedonistic, materialist, gluttons for more, more, more. Uncle Sam recording your every move via credit card trails. You're right, David, we aren't free, but freer than most, I suppose. At least, at present, we can enjoy the freedom of religion, but some would like to take that away from us!!! And that freedom is being ebbed away slowly but surely.

Ah! and immorality has a funny way of masquerading as freedom. The problems that may split the Episcopalian Church make me think of this idea of freedom.
