I'm looking at a 2001 F4S and have some questions...

Hi All,

I sold my 916 a year ago and have been thinking about buying an MV for a while now. I've found a 2001 with 750 miles on it that I am considering buying, but I have some questions. I've looked through the web for most of them, but info is rather scarce. I'd appreciate any answers, tips, suggestions, etc.

- Is there anything that I should specifically look for on this? I assume to ask about recalls and the 600 mile maintenance. Are there any specific points to ask about?

- Did/do they come with a rear stand when originally purchased? The manual available online refers to "the rear stand" a few times, making it sound as if it was included. Is this the case?

- I haven't been able to find a brief rundown on the EVO's. If I understand correctly, EVO 2 was in 2002 and bumped power from 126 to 135. It might have also bumped redline from 11,500 to 13,300, is that true? Then EVO 3 is now on the 2004s, as 2003s didn't get sent to the US.

Is there anything else that I should know? The bike does have the RG3 pipes and chip installed. Anything that I should know about that? What does this do to the hp and power delivery?

I guess that's it. Again, thanks in advance for any input.

Regards,

A 2001 model should have the early stuff already done to it. The only two things I can think of is the front brake recall/mod and make sure it has the latest model oil filter. If it's done such low k's it's possible the oil filter hasn't been changed to the most recent one.

Yes they all came with a rear stand. It's not a very good one so if you's doesn't have one don't lose much sleep. pit-bull make a very good rear stand for the mv.

The 2002 (evo 02) model did get an increase in power. I haven't riden one so I can't offer much advise for comparison over a 2001 model. Most people with a 2001 bump the rear sprocket to a 43 tooth which is a cheap way to get a reasonable gain from it. The RPM change sounds wrong. From memory my 2001 readlines close to 13,000. What I remember is that with the RG3 pipes you get a redline increase with the eprom that comes with it.

Just buy it, you won't be disappointed. I've done 30,000k on my and loved every minute.

Agree with Matts points

Being 2001 it will already have twin radiators and modified throttle bodies. Front caliper upgrade must be done if not already, check oil filter is not old grey one and make sure it has the plastic retention assisting clamp around it.

When riding it you may find it flatspots at v'low revs, some do some don't and I'm told there isn't a great deal that can be done if its one that has it. Mine used to flatspot, Powerhouse in Kent did lots of work to erradicate the problem during the first service (plugs/injectors etc), they couldn't sort it so I lived with it, now just 1000 miles later it doesn't do it at all! I was told there were some fuel mapping improvements but as mine doesnt now suffer I cant be arsed to screw the bike up.
