Concubine - in the Bible denotes a female conjugally united to a man, but in a relation inferior to that of a wife. Among the early Jews, from various causes, the difference between a wife and a concubine was less marked than it would be amongst us. The concubine was a wife of secondary rank. There are various laws recorded providing for their protection (Ex. 21:7; Deut. 21:10-14), and setting limits to the relation they sustained to the household to which they belonged (Gen. 21:14; 25:6). They had no authority in the family, nor could they share in the household government.

The immediate cause of concubinage might be gathered from the conjugal histories of Abraham and Jacob (Gen. 16;30). But in process of time the custom of concubinage degenerated, and laws were made to restrain and regulate it (Ex. 21:7-9).

Christianity has restored the sacred institution of marriage to its original character, and concubinage is ranked with the sins of fornication and adultery (Matt. 19:5-9; 1 Cor. 7:2).

Can I have a concubine without leaving the church/faith? I know two sisters who want to share a man.

Doesn't your own statement ... "concubinage is ranked with the sins of fornication and adultery" ... answer your question??

Nah, it doesn't... Now don't get me wrong, I am not trying to be a sexual deviant, but under the circumstances brought before me, I was wondering if anything remotely permitted it?

I ask this question because I know of two sisters who after much thought and soul searching came to the conclusion that there aren’t any decent minded men in their near future. One of them is married and the other is not. The single one want to have kids and the only decent married minded man in their lives is married to the other sister. Note: both sisters are ok with this arrangement, too many people are having babies out of wed lock already and as the single sister grows older, her chances of having a loving caring family slowly disappears. So I ask again is there anything in the Bible that permits this sort of situation.

BTW how does the Mormons justify multiple wives?

-- JohnQ_Public (John@aol.com), July 07, 2003.

No, there is nothing in the Bible or in the teaching of God's Church which allows for any justification of polygamy, adultery, or fornication for any reason or in any circumstances. Mormons previously allowed polygamy because they followed the perverted teachings of their founder Joseph Smith instead of the word of almighty God in this matter. However, it seems that the Holy Spirit changed His mind regarding that aspect of their doctrine, just about the same time the civil authorities started prosecuting them.

John Q Public,
No one can succeed in making a "modern case" for polygamy, if the Church that Jesus founded forbids it -- and she does. The Church forbids what Jesus (God) forbade. He spoke of "the two" becoming "one flesh" -- not "the three" or "the four" -- do you recall?

Couldn't you have more than one wife before Samson's story? After that, then wasn't it that we could only have one wife?

Two sisters....uh...yeah...whatever. Every JohnQPublic has a thing about two sisters. Heard it! [yawn]

BTW, How did you get the screen name of just "john" @aol.com? Were you one of the first four subscribers, or what? Just curious.

I'm sorry JohnQ...my last statement was a little sarcastic. I'm just tired.

I believe your question to be a bait...although I could be wrong. When I was a teenager, we used to call up the local Christian radio station and request songs by KISS (this dates me, or course.) I think your question is just the same sort of thing, that's why I gave a kidding kind of answer.

But in all seriousness...

JohnQ...you KNOW the right answer...you don't really need us to tell you, do you?
