A quote from riaa.com - "To gather evidence against P2P users who make illegal downloading possible, the RIAA will be using software that scans the public directories available to any user of a peer-to- peer network. These directories, which allow users to find the material they are looking for, list all the files that other users of the network are currently offering to distribute. When the software finds a user who is offering to distribute copyrighted music files, it downloads some of the infringing files, along with the date and time it accessed the files."

They only mention music files, but who knows...

Even for music users, it's not a problem. They're gonna be hard pressed to get a users IP address, much less their real name and address. To file a lawsuit, you've got to know who the person is, and with Kazaa, it's just not going to happen through legitimate means.

use zonealarm pro. perfect counter to this. not even that fbi program that detects everything u do on ur computer can get through this software. definitely the best counter. as for what they are searching for, mainly music at the mo, but they are also looking at movies and roms. anime is a catagory down if its fan subbed, but they might take it more seriously if its currently being aired. one way to avoid it is by putting a file with a jpg extension and name it slightly differently, cos i think they search via file types and names, not contents.

see two effective counters.

oh yeah, illegal software and games are high up on their target list too.

how about a show that used to air, but barely airs any more?

probably not. what i dont get is that ur not allowed to download something thats on tv at the mo, which is conveniently shown for free on the tv itself, which would mean video-taping that program is also illegal.

but i guess if its time has passed then i dont think they'll do anything to u. they are more interested in things that produce money at the mo, such as music hits and movies in the cinema.

if this continues, who'll dare put their mp3s in their shared folder for others to download?

i'm using the cheapo version of zonealarm (yes, the free one). is it good enuh?

I don't care. I read in the newspaper they're only going to go after people who share large amounts of american music, or something to that effect.
