Fixing SmartMedia CIS with Zio Dazzle USB 2.0 (or not)?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I am having the oft-mentioned 'card error' problems with my smartmedia cards and my Olympus 2100UZ. I purchased a Dazzle Zio cardvreader specifically to use the smprep.exe utility to repair the problem. Come to find, however, that the USB 2.0 version of the reader does not utilize smprep.exe. What are my other options for getting my cards to work? I've found tons of different solutions but none utilize hardware I have at my disposal.

Thanks, dave twilightdelight@hotmail.com

The suggestion I saw, and which worked for me, was to format the card in a Fuji camera, if you can find one which still uses Smart Media.

For Windows users I've found this software patch that apparently can fix the cards. I'm a Mac user so I haven't been able to try it but am anxious to hear of any successess you all might have with it. What the hell, the card doesn't work anyway.

That patch DOES NOT WORK unless you can find smprep.exe. If you look at the site, he says you need the ORIGINAL smprep.dll. Without it YOUR SCREWED. I have not had any luck yet finding it on the net. I am going to give Zio support a call tomorrow and see if they will part with a copy

Smprep is only available if you have the correct reader. Smprep.dll error means you don't have correct reader. Chipset of reader and smprep are not interchangable.
