Convergence movement

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

There is a movement within the Anglican, episcopal and other protestant churches called the convergence movement. It has been aroung since the early 1990s. This is an attempt to combine the liturgical, evangelical, and charismatic churches.

The claim is that is is much more than an ecumenical effort. The Eucharist is the common denominator.

It is billed as bringing back the early practices of the apostolic church.

What are your views?

The church I attend, the Charismatic Episcopal Church, was born from that movement which had it earliest seeds planted in the late 70's. One of it's pioneers, Randolph Sly, is my current Archbishop. See www.ICCEC.org for more information.

Thanks Dave, I'm familiar with the CEC, in particular, St. Stephen's in Louisville, Kentucky.

I'm a little surprised that you call yourself non-catholic christian. I thought the CEC was very vocal about considering themselves catholic and apostolic.

There is a former CEC priest, Michael Cumbie, who is very involved in the Catholic, Fullness of Truth Ministy. Are you familiar with him?

God Bless,

Hi John,

I haven't heard of Father Cumbie, but I am rather new to the church still. I've used the "non-Catholic Christian" handle for a while now at the request of forum regulars to clarify to non-regulars that I'm not posting opinions as a Roman Catholic so that they don't get the wrong impression. You're right that the CEC refers to themselves as catholic though, so in their eyes, I am a "catholic Christian"; but not wanting to offend the folks on this forum, I'll stick with the label.

Dave, I read a little and saw that Randolph Sly has founded or help found, an organization call Common Good. This appears to be an ecumenical effort toward recognizing the common Christian effort. Do you anything about it first hand? God Bless,

No, I'm sorry to say. You're mentioning it was the first time I've heard of it. I read some on the Common Good website, sounds interesting.

I have followed the convergence movement for over ten years,I was raised Roman Catholic,I was an Assembly of God Pastor, spent some time in the CEC church, now I am a Priest in the CEEC as well as a Abbot for the Order of Saint Columba. What the Converenge movement showed me is that the blending of the three streams of the church helps the flow of what the church should be,as the early church was, some times we can get enammered with one stream ,such as liturgical and major on that alone instead of blending together many common threads to enhance the church's wholeness. Speaking of Catholics , John Michael Talbot seems to be on the convergence tail,he seems to combine the charismatic, liturgical and evangelical at his hermitage. I am sure there are others as well. In case you are wondering, yes I am married,I hope the next Pope considers Married priests and nuns and women in ministry. Thanks for listening,Love in Jesus, Abbot Mike

Father Olsen,

If the Roman Catholic Church allowed married priests, would you then apply to the Vatican for priesthood? Just curious. As a CEC member, I've noticed that CEC liturgy is so closely aligned with Roman Catholicism, I was wondering what was the main barrier that kept a CEC priest from wanting to be Roman Catholic? Are the obstacles theological or marital or what? I realize you could only answer from your own perspective.

Also, what caused you to change from the CEC to the CEEC. SInce the CEC allows each priest certain liberties to be more Catholic or more Charismatic or very much reflecting all 3 streams, what was the deciding factor for you to change?

Thanks.
