Is downloading anime legal?

Does anyone know if subtitled and/or dubbed anime is copywrited and technically illegal to download? (A site would help.)

Essentially yes. There's a huge debate going on right now about this... http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature.php?id=144

If you own the original copy or delete of your computer in 24 hours. Alot of people dont listen, like me

That is a somewhat serious question, but whats its value coming from someone with your name?

Nope. It's totally illegal. It began with some nut case saying it was a loophole, it isn't. It's not in the books at all, it's one of those "urban legends" that just spread around like crazy that everyone thinks it's true. Anyways, why the hell you care, if you actually gonna d/l this stuff, you know you're doing soemthing illegal don't you, ie if you ever care to take a look at the disclaimer.

It's kind of like ROMs. Downloading and distributing it IS wrong, but you'll probably only get in real trouble if you distribute it.

In most cases, the original artists don't care about fansubs as long as they haven't sold off the series to a DVD/VHS company. As long as fansubbers stop distribution when a series is optioned, the companies/artists really don't care. But, in the case of AnimeJunkies, that view might change soon.

To answer the question: No.

hmmm...that is really a debatable question...but apparently if u go along with ethical belief...yes it is wrong to download all these animes..unless da producer or the author themselves allow it to be downloaded which is very very unlikely...but since its like ervybody is doing it...ethical beliefs are sumhow redundant..thus that is where the debate is...if there is like so many people doing it..why is it wrong..it is like telling us that almost everybody is wrong...

so here is my solution...if u really like da anime..sum sort of a die hard fan kinda thing..then dun download it..becos u are a die hard fan so u have to support ur favorite anime..but if it is like u jus wanna watch it for fun..then go ahead..cos u dun want to spend money on sumtin that u dun really need..thats what i do neway..so there nothing for u to be guilty about when u download an anime da next time rite..jhaf a nice day

As long as nobody that cares don't find out, it's okay!!!

Well.....uhhh.......technically it 'is' illegal, but, as long as nobody knows, you're safe ! ^___^;;

It's legal to Download it as long as IT IS NOT licesned here in the States. And once it's Licesnsed your supposed to destroy everything you have of it. Animeondvd.com has a awsome licensing list.

As Adam Sandler said once in waterboy "What Mama dont know wont hurt"

to Muhammad if someone is a real die hard fan and wants to SUPPORT!!! The Anime then they would buy it not steal it to support the anime is to support the makers. But if you have no morals or ethics like me then you would just not give a damn and download it because your an animejunki. Granted i just started getting in to anime not that long ago so i still have not downloaded much yet.

It wasnt Sandler. It was the coach. U got the movie right though...

Oh yea! The topic... Heres the funny thing. Distributing it is wrong if it's licensed. Downloading it is wrong only if you keep after your 24 hour evaluation period. (to decide if you want to buy the licensed version) The whole thing is comical when you think about it: If its illegal to distribute, how come it is legal to evaluate a copy from a distributor. I dont really know what to think. Oh, but it doesnt matter at all if you own the copy already, the licensed version that is... and you use the downloaded crappy version as a backup copy. Alls i do is download and extend my evaluation period by making anime VCD's for my personal home use.
