Edgar Allan Poe was born in 1809 and died in 1849 of disease related to alcoholism. In 1836 he married his 13- year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm, whose death 11 years later inspired the poem Annabel Lee. Poe's career ranged from Richmond, Virginia, where he edited the Southern Literary Messenger, to New York, where he ran The Broadway Journal. He is buried in Baltimore, Maryland.

His death was most probably related to his drinking, but this does not rule out other possiblities. It's easy to blame alcohol because of what we know about Poe, but who knows?

Wow! Some of these posts are so far off the scope of the original question, it makes me wonder what we're all coming to. The worst of you could very easily be characters in Poe's storys, being somehow twisted and lost to civility and basic human nature.

As to the question that he was married to or 'with' his cousin, even any fool should know that in that day and age and long into the distant past, marrying cousins was a matter-of-coarse and not at all uncommon. Concerning his literary genuis, you will be hard pressed to find anything in your own reading repetoir that comes even close to his stature (most of you, that is), or even, that rises above pure doggerel at all. Quite simply, his tales are not only entertaining as concepts but told with such flare and style as to firmly fix his place among the greatest writers in human history.

Last, how did he die? I beleive it was alchoholism, citing only the majority of reports that agree thusly.

If you cannot appreciate Poe, then perhaps you should first learn to read and secondly, work quickly to raise that proficiency beyond the 'Golden Books' and 'Nancy Drew'. To do otherwise, opening your mouths to spout out disgusting filth and garbage will only be forever, your eternal witness to the world that you are incredibly stupid and ignorant.

Edgar Allan Poe, being one of my favorite writers, does not deserve this type of criticism (referring to the "gay" comments). To answer the original question, I would like to say that Poe's death is merely a mystery; a mystery that, in my opinion, we should just leave alone. All we can do is cherish his well written poems, as gruesome as they may seem.

Though this topic hasn't been brought up in this message board, I would like to inform all of you that Poe lived a very hard, troublesome life. His father deserted the him at and his mother died when he was just a young boy. These tragedies can stain a person's life forever. So, those of you that posted those cruel and unsympathetic words, should read a biography on Poe. And if you do, I guarantee that you will regret what you said about him.
