Gold Bug

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Work of Edgar Allan Poe : One Thread

I am Commadore of the East Cooper Outboard Motor located on "Gold Bug" island between Sullivan's Island and Mt Pleasant S.C. Our emblem is a "Gold Bug". Since I became a member of the club I've been told that Mr. Poe use to come to our island to write. Our emblem, the Gold Bug, was selected because of his story The Gold-Bug & rumors of his using this small island to write. In The Gold-Bug Jupiter, Legrand, Poe & the dog go on a expedition into the hills upon the main land. The story indicates that they crossed the creek at the head of the island and ascended to the high ground on the mainland. This story sounds like he could be talking about our island. I'm looking for any information that would support the rumors that he use to write on our island or that period of time he spent in the Charleston. Thank you in advance for any assistance you might provide.

The Island in which the adventure took place is Sullivan’s Island. I suppose it all depends on whether the Gold Bug island got it's name before the story or afterwards.
