What is "Header Trick?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hi,

I saw the term "Header Trick" mentioned a few times here for SVCD to be played in DVD players. Just curious to know what exactly is Header Trick and when do you need it?

The header trick is to mux a SVCD using TMPGenc as a non-compliant VCD. There is no reason why a DVD player can't play SVCD as SVCD uses MPEG-2 video, which DVD supports, but some manufacturers were too lazy to write firmware to support it. By putting a fake VCD header on the file, it fools the DVD into playing it because it thinks it is playing a VCD. Some Sony players were notorious for needing this trick. If you have a DVD player that won't play SVCD but will play VCD you can try it, but it is not guaranteed to work.

Does applying the vcd header trick help if your DVD player plays the SVCD, but plays it very choppy, almost like sputtering?

Thanks,

Sean
