Why wont my dvd player play my vcd?

Hi, i recently obtained a vcd from a friend of mine and my dvd player will not read it. it is on a CD-R disc and my player is a Sony NS400D. any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Are you sure its not a SVCD - SVCD's will not plat in your machine - check out vcdhelp.com for further info on your machine.

I'm sorry, but realistically you will have to buy another DVD player. A few years ago Sony basically made two types of DVD players for sale in the US - those that supported CD-R pretty well but wouldn't play standard SVCD and those that didn't support CD-R/W but would play SVCD. Sounds like you have the 2nd type of player. It is possible on these players to burn to CD-RW discs and your player will most likely play it, but that's not a cheap or good solution. It boils down to this - copy your VCD to CD-RW or buy another player. Sorry. Both of those types of players play VCD fine, it's just a question of whether they'll play it on CD-R or not and it sounds like you have a player that doesn't support CD-R. Officially those players don't support CD-RW either, but CD-RW is known to work on them. I just pass the SVCD info on in case you ever have an interest in that format too.
