Can anyone provide any information on where the Right of Passage began, and what it actually is?

To which "Rights (sic) of Passage" are you referring?

Rites of Passage have a long historical roots among many tribes and cultures. They were done to mark the onset of puberty and the passage from child to adult.

In Judaism, the Bar (and in more recent years, the Bat) Mitzvah is a Rite of Passage. Some denominations have a Confirmation ceremony which, in some ways, also serves as a Rite of Passage.

Some AME churches have adopted and adapted similar ceremonies, but so far as I know, there is no single ritual for the denomination. Various guides are probably available at the library or Christian bookstores.
