Prayer for Good News

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

Dear Virgen de Guadalupe and the Holy Trinity,

Please intercede and pray for us and help us gain true understandment of the abundance of God's love for us. It's difficult at times but through prayer and meditation on your teachings it seems we learn to go on. Please answer our prayers.

Excuse me, "Boogaloo Shrimp."
I know that you mean well, but I think that I have to speak up so that our "separated brethren" who visit this page may not misjudge the Catholic Church. I think that they could get the wrong impression from a few things you have said in your prayer.

First ... It is not customary for Catholics to address a prayer to both the Blessed Virgin and the Holy Trinity. Someone may mistakenly think that you are referring to Mary as a goddess, when she is actually a creature like you and me.

Second ... Although Our Lady indeed "intercede[s] for us," we don't ask the Holy Trinity to intercede for us. With whom would they intercede, since no Being is greater than God (the Divine Trinity).

Third ... Strictly speaking, Our Lady does not have "teachings" of her own. God teaches us, as does the Church representing him. One could perhaps say that, in private revelations, Mary, as "Mother of the Church," reminds us of the Church's teachings. Or one could say that by her recorded actions or words (especially "Do whatever He tells you") she counsels us.

God bless you for your devotion.
John
