Some are REALLY arguing for rabies although it seems quite probable the immediate cause was an election fraud, forced drink, scam by a local gang that threw his health(already precarious) well over the edge. www.eapoe.org. Lack of uncontroversial proof and the state of medical practice keep this an unproven mystery.

I teach freshman English and we have an article from the Reader's Digest about how he died. Someone took his file and gave it to a medical student. His file was only labeled E.P. The person did thorough research and came to the conclusion that the person in the file died from rabies. I will try to find the article so I can get the exact date and issue so you can read it.

The circumstances of Poe's death are still a mystery. what i can tell you is that he was found unconsious in baltimore and was brought to a hospital. he died on sunday october 7th 1849 and buried in a yard of the presbyterian church in baltimore maryland

Dan your wrong, he was in fact allergic to alchol, and tried, but it was never proven that he was addicted to opium. My theory is that a combination of lead poisoning and his heart problems, a long time ago they used pewter mugs while drinking wine and heated them so the lead seeped into his drink.

i think he actually read one of his books and scared himself to death calmly, sadly his long lost brother alburtoe didn't want this so revived him joyfully then put a gun to his head then realised he had no bulets so tied him to a train track whilst singing choo choo thomas choo choo! he was then run over by a herd of cows trying to get to the other side of the field
