Did Poe take drugs and if so what ones?

No, he didn't in the modern sense. In Poe's day, opium was as widely used as aspirin, and I'm sure Poe used it medicinally. Alcohol was Poe's real problem, as all of his modern biographers agree.

Umm.., that guy up there ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^, just gave u the wring anser, he was too a drug addict because everyone who he had feelings for or he loved died most of them from the same deciese

B>S> the first guy was absolutely correct. Poe was using opium medicinally, but soon found it addictive . It is believed he either died from rabies or an opium overdose. He was an alcoholic. His nanny fed him bread soaked in opium to keep him from crying because both of his parents were struggling actors and couldn't handle the stress of parenting child. thnx for your time.

OK if you people don't think poe was on drugs, your just fucking ignorant. You can't wright the ungodly things he wrote just by getting drunk.Trust me,I'd know

DID ANYONE NOTICE THAT Kelsey Rodriguez can't speak English properly?

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2004

Poe was on drugs. His work was extremely unlikely to have been done without drugs.

Most authors that write with such intensity and passion, have used drugs to gain that. If drugs did not exsist, neither would most of your CD and book collection. Poe rocks my socks.

Yeah Tom Visa, your damn right. And I thought I'm poor at speaking English cause I didn't understand those words from rodriguez. by the way...I'm a German!

Ah, Ok, to those that beleive that creativity is not possible without drugs are Fucking Morons and if you really believe that you can't write that dark without being on drugs are also fucking stupid and don't understand the phrase "Life is HELL!!!" I am not saying that Poe was not a drug user and I am not saying he was... What I am saying is that his works could have come about without him being on drugs. And to those who say that he had to be on drugs to write what he wrote are Fucking Stupid. Sure, they say I'm am ignorant but I ask them, do they really understand the phrase "LIFE IS HELL"? and if they do, Then I want to konw why they have not committed suicide? What is their reason for living and what are they doing to express their sufferings?

Good Grief...we should just honor the man for what he was--quite an original gothic writer who's vocabulary was both astounding and inspiring. Sure, he had many morbid moments, but does anyone care to address his impeccable construction of the detective novels which inspired the creation of the Sherlock Holmes series? Poe may have experienced problems with drugs and/or alcohol, but so have many other creative souls throughout history. Vincent Van Gogh, and Jimi Hendrix just to name two. It's the creative mind that sometimes allows the world to weigh it down. One's psyche is often invaded by the negativity which pervades the world we live in. That's quite obvious in many of your comments, I've noticed. Do not curse that which you do not understand just "because." For those of you who have something to criticize, or a point to make,I'd suggest you do it constructively and provide support for your opinions. Anyone can voice an opinion, it takes a bit more character to back up what you say--especially where literature is concerned. There's no need to attack or slander people who find certain writers both thought-provoking and open to interpretation.

No Poe didnt use cocaine, he may have used laudanum and opium, but those were drugs that we're commonly perscribed back then. He was also a heavy drinker, but that doesn't mean he wrote genius shit because he was on drugs or alcohol. So get your shit straight

I am an artist and i write. I write on death, i paint death. Some of my things can be twisted and looks like i would do drugs, but i dont. Just because what i person writes is dark and twisted does not mean that they are crazy, psychotic, addicted to drugs, or an alchoholic. I did not say that poe was not. He did do drugs, but not as frequently as you thought, he used them mostly after the death of a loved one. People in the 1800's frequently died of the same disease. Because most disease's (even ones as common as the cold and flu to extremes of AIDs) could easily be commuted and there were no cures or antibiotics for any of this and doctors, hospitals and news in general about sickness was not that good. So people were not treated at all or they were and not treated correctly, thats how people around each other died of the same thing. Poe was an alchoholic but not to the exreme that you place it to. Yes he was a drinker, but he knew his limits because even with the smallest amounts of alchohol his personality changed severly. And he could not handle large amounts at all without becoming severly ill to the point of death.

Maybe you should get off the site...this is an Edgar Alan Poe sight...and I can prove your stupid ass wrong in an instant. We are not gay because we like Poe...and by calling us "fags' you are calling us a bundle of sticks...If we are fags, I'd like to be piled around you so I can burn you to death....I digress in disroving your ignorant claim that we are gay. I use logic: If some people who like Poe are gay, and some people who like Poe are not gay, then are all people who lie Poe gay or are all people who like Poe not gay? If you cannot understand logic, then just drop dead and burn in hell with the rest of your crackhead, redneck, ghetto buddies.

Edgar Allan Poe was a gothic and dark individual. His perspective on life was bleak and his writings were frantic. I don't doubt he took drugs, opium in turn creates a heighted sense of depression when not in use, and writing could be a very nice way to cope. People write there best works while depressed.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2005

Common! How could any non-high person come up with the crazy shit poe did? Fucktards.

-- Anonymous, February 08, 2005

I believe Poe was an addict. He wrote with such passion, not letting one detail go by. If you look at any sober writer's work compared to poe's work it is much more detailed. And if you look at the affects of cocaine it makes you focus into each and every detail. But whether poe did any type of drugs or not is not really important. Look at Whitney Houston, Jimmi Hendrix, Elvis Presley. A majority of the people that we look up to in America and praise are often drug addicts. That doesn't change his writing though. He wrote like no one else I've ever come across. So I don't believe it is really any of our business or important whether or not he did engage in those types of activities. And to those of you swearing and making fun of the poeple on here... Why are you even here? If your not interested and just think it is "gay" and all you can do is swear, then you must not have a life. Your making fun of people on an edgar allan poe website... how mature

-- Anonymous, February 16, 2005

Um... Poe was a very dark person. He probably did do drugs. The Raven is enough proof for that.
