Tire pressure gauges

greenspun.com : LUSENET : zipcar : One Thread

It would be a great convenience if Zipcar provided tire pressure gauges for their cars (unless they already have and I couldn't find it?). I've found that air pumps at gas stations are somewhat unreliable, and over-inflating a tire is potentially problematic to say the least.

My last 2 Zipcars needed air put in the tires. I was surprised that previous drivers hadn't taken care of the problem; I noticed almost immediately that both cars were pulling to the right because of low tire pressure. To all Zipcar drivers, please put air in any tire that obviously needs it!

Thanks.

I heartily endorse this suggestion. One of the most avoidable operating errors on any vehicle is maintaining proper tire pressure. I try to keep a gauge with me, but I don't always remember, so one in the glove compartment would be great. Firestone wouldn't have had so many failures if tire pressure was maintained at the proper level. The fact of the matter is that it is much safer to be 5 PSI over than under, since radial tires keep the maximum tread on the road over a wide range, and the greatest risk is overheating from underinflation.
