How about a ZipCar in Northern Manhattan

greenspun.com : LUSENET : zipcar : One Thread

I live in upper Manhattan and find it very inconvienient to have to travel by subway to the garage. How about putting a couple of cars in the northern sections. For example, I am sure it would be profitable to keep a couple near Columbia University (116th & Broadway). Washington Heights and Inwood are also communities with growing populations that might like ZipCar. The idea that these communities are only filled with non-English speaking folk who only drive old fix-er-uppers is getting old. I am on a 60-day trial membership. My decision as to if I should continue will partly be based on if this service has any plans of moving closer to my neighborhood. Many of my neighbors would use it. For example, if I had a ZipCar walking distance away, I would use it semi-weekly just to go to Fairway.

This is not so much an answer but more of a RIGHT ON! My husband and I are moving to Washington Heights and would LOVE a ZipCar nearby. There are tons of young folks up there desperate to be more mobile. Perhaps we can start a petition to the nice folks at ZipCar?

I am also a "hear, hear" on upper Manhattan. I would also remind the below 125th Street crowd that Washington Heights is mere moments to GWB with no long waits on the Harlem River or West Side Highway. Lucas also has the right idea about shopping trips to Fairway and, for those who prefer Westchester, Stew Leonards.

Agreed! It's a drag taking the subway all the way down to the Upper West Side, just to turn around and drive north again to cross the GWB or Henry Hudson. Give us a car in the 180s!
