He was definately an alcoholic, however, to say he was a drug addict is argueable. He did not drink for pleasure, but rather to "erase" his painful memories and less than satisfactory life he had. In his writings, he portrayed many characters as drunk. ie: "The Cask of Amontillado" , "The Angel of the Odd" , "The Man of the Crowd" , "The Narrative of Arthur Gordan Pym", "Hop-Frog", etc...
