Steyr PIV Update.

04/07/03

Thanks to all who imputed on my original posting ( SSG P4 )

Well, just to keep you up to date here are a few titbits.

I purchased the rifle in January, but … no 30mm SSG scope mounts in the country! Just my luck its a 5/8" dovetail and no one else makes them.

It took 6 weeks for the mounts to come in, then I got the bad news, my NSX scope was out of stock … apparently your US Navy Seals bought the entire stock of the 3.5-15x50 Mil Dot NXS.

At this stage I was thinking …. ‘Omen’ or ‘Divine intervention’ or something was trying to tell me something ( he laughs )

Any way, 2 weeks ago the new stocks of NSX scopes came in to the Australian agent here in Adelaide, South Australia and I bolted down there as fast as I could.

‘Range Day’ was next :).

The supplied factory accuracy test report indicated 1MOA guarantee with 190gn Lapua Match.

The tests were done over 3 days, with the first day hot and still ( we are in Summer here )and the last day wet and still.

After zeroing in ( 100m ) and running in the barrel I can report the following to those who may be interested.

For comparisons the following ammunition was used. ( 100m range ) All groups were 10 x 3 shot and measured centre to centre.

Std FN Military 7.62 Ball produced 1.75 to 2 MOA. ( 30 rounds )

Factory PMC 150g .308 soft point produced approx. 1.25 MOA. ( 30 rounds )

Handloaded Match ammo. ( 30 rounds ) 168g Sierra Matchking ( molly coated ) with 42gns AR2206 produced at worst 13mm centre to centre groups ( .5 MOA ) with most groups achieving 6mm – 9mm groups ( that’s .24 MOA - .35 MOA )

Handloaded Match ammo. ( 30 rounds ) 168g Sierra Matchking ( molly coated ) with 40gns AR2206 produced practically the same groupings, the only real difference was a 30mm ( 1.25" ) drop in impact and for some strange reason a 10mm shift to the left?

This weekend I shall try 200m and 300m ranges to evaluate the trajectories for the 15" P4 barrel.

Thanks

Tony.
