Spot welders for hobby/auto restoration? Need suggestions.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Resistance Welding : One Thread

Is there a spot welder on the market thats 110 volt and perfect for the hobby auot rebuilder? If so, I'd really appreciate a push in the right direction. Or would it be easier to just build one for myself?... thanks Thomas

Response to spot welders

Are you looking for a portable spot welder or a floor mount model?

Here is one option for a light weight portable gun spot welder, which runs off 110 volts:

The info: 110V SPOT WELDER

Runs on Household Current Make quick, strong spot welds without having to install a 240V outlet.

* 6'' tongs lock firmly onto materials * Works with mild, galvanized or stainless steel * Welds uncoated stock as thick as 1/8''

Specifications

* Rated output: 1.5 KVA @ 50% duty cycle * Dimensions: 1'' x 6'' x 4-1/2'' * Tool weight: 25-1/2 lbs.

ITEM 45689-0VGA $199.99

They also have a 220V, 2.5 KVA @ 50% duty cycle model for $220.

These may or may not be suitable for what you are doing; it depends on what you want to weld.

Dear Thomas:

I recommend to use at least 220V single phase handheld units to get the right penetration. They are heavy to use about 25 to 30 pounds depending on which arms you aare using.

Thera are used single phased cable welders with about 10 lbs. spot guns. [text was edited by moderator]

Not sure if this one fits your needs, but a friend of mine sells these. Seems like a good price, and it's a really solid unit. http://www.aerobug.com
