A natural poet born from two actors, his teachers and especially Mrs. Stanard helped encourage his talent. His contemporary Romantic poets(Byron, Shelley, etc.) struck a very genuine chord with his own personal and poetic predilections. I doubt once exposed to any literature and pen in hand anything could have stopped him. His earliest poems were love poems to schoolgirls, satires and classical(often in Latin) forms for special occasions. The earliest scrap though is more typical Poe "Last night, (by) many care and toils oppress'd/Weary, I laid me on a couch to rest-" School teachers:Joseph Clarke, Rev. John Bransby).
