Light 9' oars for fixed seat racing

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Open-water rowing : One Thread

I am considering trying to adapt non-wood sliding seat oars, shortened to 9', for my fixed seat 17' Monument River Wherry. I presently row with a pair of 9' homemade spruce wide blade spoons that are very effective but suffer from weight and balance problems. The pull feels about right but the return is way too much work.... Ideally, I could adapt the D style oarlocks to my traditional 1/2' sockets. Anyone with any experience or suggest

I know this isn't really the answer to your question, but why don't you just buy/make a set of 8ft oars? Seems like the length/balance issues would be resolved, or am I missing something? -Gary-
