the poem itself is about a search for complete happiness, about how a knight searched and searched until he didn't ahve the strength to go on, then he learned that to find Eldorado he had to keep going, he couldn't stop. As for it's meaning, i'd have to say that it's simply saying that if you are searching for something that is very important (love, money, ect.) don't ever give up. even if you die in your persuit for it, just keep going... you never know maybe death is the way to get it (jk......kinda)

well if you look at whare america was back then, they were heading out west in search of new lives and gold, so i think this poem reflects on the events of america, during the westward expansion
