What is a "CD video" disc not VCD?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hi, I found in my CD collection a few "CD video" discs that were released in the late 1980s. I tried to play them on my DVD player and computer DVD ROM drive, but only the music tracks were recognized. Does anybody know how to play those old CD videos?

CD Video, or CDV, is an obsolete format that is only playable on laserdisc players. The format allowed for one five minute video track that used uncompressed analog video similar to laserdiscs and up to 20 minutes of CD compatible audio. The format died a quick death everywhere except Japan, where it managed to survive for a few years. There is no way to play the video on a PC or DVD player. You will have to find a laserdisc player if you want to see the video.
