The problem with trusting your feelings is that life and morality boil down to "do what you feel like", which is exactly how many people would like to live their lives. But it is not how God calls us to live our lives. That's why He revealed objective truth to us, so that we don't have to trust something as unstable and unreliable as our feelings.

Seth.....you are right on target. Most folks just don't get it and like the previous poster think trusting your feelings means choosing whatever you feel like. Religion, the somewhat mortar of the soul often hardens when it is concentrated with doctrine. You know .....the greatest scripture is the Universe itself. May the force be with you!!

Seth,

I agree with you, to a point...We must listen to our conscience ("Jiminy Cricket").

But Paul's point is that we must also have a properly formed conscience in the first place.

God wants us to love Him with our whole heart and mind and soul.

He made us so that we may know Him, love Him, and serve Him while we're here on earth, so that we may be with Him for all eternity.

God is so awesome, we can't even imagine it!

But He gave us a Church to guide and instruct us, so that we might know Him more intimately. "Upon this rock, I will build My Church." We do need to understand and trust the word He left us, in its entirety. The Church helps us to do that.

Pax Christi.

Indeed we must listen to our conscience - but conscience is not a "feeling". Conscience is the ability to make rational moral decisions, based on information previously received. If we have not provided our conscience with correct information (otherwise known as "the truth"), then it is incapable of making valid moral decisions, and cannot be trusted as a moral guide. So, following our conscience is not the same as following our feelings. Conscience is rational. Feelings are not.

I wonder how the history of the world would be different if all decisions were based on feelings only.

Despotic King from the past: I feel like killing today, but my conscience tells me it's wrong. Who cares, I will kill a great many people today, because I feel like it!

Well so much for feelings!

Note, that the abortion and euthanasia people are always using arguments that involve "feelings" to kill people in kindness. Christians are even labeled as fanatics, by the mere fact, they raise moral objections to the killing of others! Now we would not want what is right or wrong, to get in the way of our feelings!

Interesting thread developing. Is Mr. Bush currently riding on feelings of paranoia or guided by God as he has " stated?" Is he in a killing mood?

Feelings and desire are not always the same thing... We were all born with a little bit of Jesus in us... Unless we learn to REPRESS that little Jesus through defense mechanisms say, or drug habits... He WILL always be there... our God has never and will never abandon us... and anyway I will not take quotes from man saying that he is right as "gospel" the only reason we ever could have to trust the bible is cuz others said so... trust the divine spark of Jesus over ink and paper... all the time... every time... God speaks in the wind and in your heart... not on paper... anyway the people that DO kill all the time are clinically insane... i should know... i spent months in the hospital with them... why do you think most all civilizations have innately the same set of morals... not killing (unless war or sacrifice) not stealing... God guides us... dont trust anything if it doesnt speak the language of love
