If by "the live-in issue" you mean pre-marital sexual relationships (fornication), the Church adheres to what the scriptures say on the subject ...

Paul, from which bible did you obtain theses passages or are they from memory? Your "quotes" contain some discrepancies from the New American Catholic Bible. For example, in it 1 Cor. 6:9 reads "Do you not know that the unjust will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers nor boy prostitutes nor practicing homosexuals..."

Hi, Ed. Long time, no talk.

I thought that Paul might miss your question to him (from yesterday), so I decided to "top" this thread. But then I got to thinking that I might reply myself.

Please correct me if I am being a dummy, but it seems as though you may be under the impression that the New American Bible (NAB) [with Revised New Testament] is the only version from which Catholics are allowed to quote. I guess I am led to this feeling because you used a pretty strong word -- "discrepancies." I wouldn't call the differences "discrepancies," but rather "variants in translation."

I see that Paul's quotation has "effeminate" and "homosexuals" where the RNAB has "boy prostitutes" and "practicing homosexuals."
I looked into this and found that approved Catholic translations other than the RNAB have such things as "effeminate" (Douay-Reims) and "sexual perverts" (RSV, covering both expressions in one).
I feel sure that the RNAB editors, working in the 1980s, wanted to use modern words of greater precision. Their thinking?

I do believe, though, that Paul is quoting from a Protestant translation known as the New American Standard Bible (NAS or NASB), which lacks seven Old Testament books. Paul's quotation of 1 Cor 6:9 (and another verse of his that I checked) match exactly to the NASB that is online. One comment I found about the NASB is this: "The goal of the New American Standard Bible, which was completed in 1971, was to stick as closely as possible to the literally accurate, word-for-word meaning of the Holy texts."

Yes I was using the NAS, not because I particularly favor it, but just because it was close at hand, and I figured the translation was accurate enough to make the point I was making.

Thanks Paul for responding, and thank you John for the work you’ve done on this. John, yes, I was aware of the other bibles Catholics use to quote from. My point in making the comment I did was to raise the issue that we should be careful to qualify the actions of others when labelling them (as the NAS bible reference has in this instance) by using terms such as “acting out” or “practising”. I feel it helps to avoid the prejudicing and stereotyping of groups. In this day and age of political correctness I guess I prefer the “modern words of greater precision” as you say.
