This depends on the Camcorder. I use SONY that captures in AVI. I know other SONY products that capture MPEG2. Look at your camporder spec. It will tell you. USB is the port through the captured video goes into the computer. Any format, AVI, MPEG or others will pass through

Don't be fooled by the DV format (Digital 8, Mini DV) if your aim is to transfer your footage to DVD. With DV camcorders you cannot directly capture in Mpeg2. You have to capture in AVI format then it has to be rendered into Mpeg2. A word of warning for those, like me, thought that it would be a simple & instantaneous process - rendering say a 1 hour recording will take anything up to 4 hours...add the time it takes to capture in the first place then to edit and you are looking at anything up to a day for the finished piece!!!! The manufacturers don't tell us all this, do they?? There are a few camcorders (Sony DCR-IP55, DCR-IP1, DCR-DVD300, JVC GR-PD1)) which record in Mpeg2 so there is no need for rendering but obviously these camcorders don't come cheap!!
