Unique and vital contributions to the new American literature scene thoug he cut against the grain of the Northern establishment(transcendetalsits, Longfellow, etc.) I think the expansionof the nation and of science most stimulated the poet away from his other character side of lonely, romantic melancholy and otherworldly flights. He lived in many of America's biggest, growing cities. I think these general social changes- in America- had the greatest effect though he took literary influences very much from England in the contemporary Romantic movement- as far as the art itself went more than political ideas.
