Determining "Level" of expertise

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Everything About Teaching and Learning the Piano : One Thread

I am one of the many who is trying to teach myself, and spend a lot of time doing so, and find your site very helpful.

Can someone tell me how one determines what "Level" they have achieved, and just what that means?

It is best for a teacher to assess which level you are at. It takes me two months to place a student in any particular grade. I assess according to how their experience and rate of learning matches the grade levels of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. There are other examining boards, of course.

Levels can also refer to the different books of a series by a particular publisher. I want my intermediate students to finish a work in 6-8 weeks, so I take this into consideration when picking their level.
