His balloon hoax stories(Hans Pfall), his constant mixing of science, analysis, inGothic circumstances(melding the fantastic with the worlds of new discoveries and science) are everywhere. "Pym" and other tales lead directly to Twain, Jules Verne and other precursors of sf. Most clearly the mix of fantasy and science created the marriage of Gothic and reason in the invention of the modern detective story(Rue Morgue, The Gold Bug).

In essence Poe would have loved the sf genre as it has blossomed more than pure fantasy which he tended to deride.
