Do Zipcar come with EZ pass and if so how is that billed?

Yes, all our vehicles in the NY metro area have them. Your Zipcar account is charged as soon as we get the bills from EZ Pass, which can be up to 30 days after you go through the toll.

We don't have any plans to add EZ Pass to the Boston cars at this time. While it would be convenient for some members, there are significant costs above the toll charges that we would need to pass on to everyone.

As Boston area cash customers pay double for turnpike tolls, when will transponders be added for Boston?

I also desire EZ pass/Fastlanes in Boston cars, and I'm curious what are the "extra costs" that make prohibitive putting transponders in Boston cars, as opposed to NY cars. Specifics?

Back when I owned a car, I signed up for FastLane. You have to pay for the transponder (which then was about $25) and contribute to a minimum amount to your account (at that time, $30). Typically, you set it up so that your credit card replinished the account each time that $30 was depleted. FastLane, unlike ZipCar, is not a vision of efficiency and they do not debit your credit card directly for each individual transation.

In Boston, as far as I know, the toll rate is the same whether you're using the FastLane or paying cash. They are however making a concerted effort to push people towards the use of the FastLane by making fewer and fewer cash lanes available. Therefore, the big plus of the FastLane is the reduced wait time.
