To follow orders and keep their mouthes shut.

As for what they were normally ordered to do, that depended entirely on whether there was a battle on, or if the army was encamped, marching, or if there were simply a latrine to dig. I sense (I am extraordinarily sensitive to these things) that, of the many duties of a hypaspist, those during battle may be the ones you are most interested in. Battles do tend to overshadow the more normal activities of armies in the eyes of posterity, since there is often blood and guts and the fate of nations to bandy about. But armies, as Napolean Bonaparte said, travel on their bellies. And war, George Orwell said, consists of long periods of deadly boredom relieved only by moments of sheer terror. That's the stuff I am good at. The boredom especially. For a better look at those moments of terror and the part hypaspists played in them, try searching on "Alexander" and "hypaspists" on Google
