Does anyone feel that they are going through depression but they just don't want to talk to anyone about it? Do you have any things that you do on your own to try to help yourself?

Sasha ,are you looking for help for depression for yourself or someone you know ?

-- Steve (un@home.com), February 08, 2003.

For self, but I really don't want to "talk to a professional"...Looking for ideas to handle things myself.

-- Sasha Love (TiredTrying@hotmail.com), February 09, 2003.

I will tell a short part about myself and an ailment I have because I feel a lot of ailments and disease may have different symtoms , but I believe the causes are a lot of times the same.I have no medical back ground and also see myself as naive and uneducated. So what I write is from what little I've seen work for me with my ailment and also work for a friend with her depression.

I've seen the diet I'm on also help out my friend and had made her depression disappear until she changed her diet and ate what ever foods in the store she liked. Most were processed foods , grown with chemical fertilizers and are what I'd consider unhealthy.

I don't have personal experience with being depressed , but my friend has suffered from depression for about 15 years.

I myself was diagnosed in 1995 with Multiple Sclorosis and from what I've read on it . it affects the brain and nervous system and can cause a person to feel euphoric (happy ) even when things seem to be going wrong.Lately I feel those affects .It may also be combined with being at the point in life that I finally realized I only have a certain amount of control over my life and learned to take what life throws at me.

Because my diet changed quickly I was feeling the symtoms of my ailment stronger than usual. My symtoms are my arms get weak and I lose motor skills in them .Since I use and need my arms for a lot of intense manual labor this isn't good .I also have trouble with vision and get confussed with deep thoughts being transfered to words to communicate with people. Simple stuff is no problem.Writing this here is a little on the difficult side . I actually use the forums as an exercise in communicating literally to try to keep my mind sharp and alert. It helps greatly.I think ?

I usually eat a lot of raw organic greens and summer and winter squash , sweet potatoes and other stuff from my garden. Before my gardens were producing well , I was able to buy ( afford ) oraganically grown vegetables.Which are high priced foods . We had a severe drought last growing season and this caused my garden to not produce foods even though they were watered . It was to hot for most of the vegetables to grow properly .My diet of foods grown at home organically is what keeps my symtoms to the point I can do mostly what I need to, to lead and live a normal functional life . I believe this diet can help out in depression and have seen it help out someone who was clinically depressed. If you are not able to grow your own foods.Buying organically grown foods from a health food store or a food coop is the way to go. Even though they are more expensive , greens that are orgaically grown don't cost too much.Whole grains , perferably brown rice is also good to eat and has nutients that are essential for both body and mind health. You may already eat these foods ? but if you don't , try adding them to your diet.

It is a coincident that this suject is brought here by you . Today I've gotten a phone call from a friend in the city. I haven't seen him in about 3 months . He called and started the conversation by saying , " Steve , I love you man.He talked for 2 hours about life. What made him call was 2 days ago he'd gotten word that another friend of his who was suffering from depression and was Bi -Polar and killed himself. I don't know what the term Bi-Polar means ?? I've just heard this word used recently.

Now here is what I think helps any ailment , and seen this help someone who has gotten into depression so deep , they wouldn't speak or couldn't communicate for weeks at a time.

Diet of whole natural foods can help pull someone out of deep depession.Raw organically grown greens seem to work good. And I have seen people lose their depession ,which they had for weeks, by eating one large raw salad a day with a variety of ( organically grown ) green vegetables.

Some people don't even know it but have a bad reaction from coffee that can cause severe depression. And I've noticed people whom I've socialized with who suffer from depression , drink unusually high amounts of coffee , and it's mostly accompanied by smoking tobbaco with the coffee.

Than their are enviomental factors that cause depression, work ,lack of work ,feeling no or little accomplishments in life, worrying about things either real or fears of what may be,even though it may never happen. We can't control life sometimes and need to look for the things in our life that are enjoyable. We may even try to make things more enjoyable by going out , trying something different.

Watching the news or reading the news paper should be avoided if one is depressed.News paper try to make stories more interesting by exaggerating facts. Even if things in the news seem bleak and depressing we have no control over things like war or death or suffering and should not focus or dwell on these things. Some people find the news to be interesting and informing and like to read and listen to news.I find it to be misinforming hype upped negative entertainment. I also feel it is used to confuss the public and keep their attention on something like the war with Iraq , to distract the public from things that are going on here in the U.S. that can be of more importance to the public , because we can change things here that are close to home.We can't do anything about a war so far away .And even a protest will have no affect on what the politicians will do. Things that prevent the common winter time blues for me :::

I like to keep busy all day.I just steped in the house to eat and rest a spell , but I'm taking apart a large goat shed to move it to another part of my land.I enjoy physical activity and engage in outside work most of the day. I find this doesn't leave my mind time to worry or become depressed or get the common blues that even non clinically depressed people get .

I see people in my neighborhood who seem depressed even though they are not clinically depressed, usually more this time of year because the weather keeps most people indoors with little exercise.I've recommended to friends to get out more often or take up a hobby or take a walk in the brisk cold weather , but they' rather sit on a couch and watch tv and feel the blues.Taking a walk is great medicine.

Speaking with people with similar interest is another thing that is needed to keep some from being depressed.I play a musical instument and go out to places where people like to hear music that I play .I see this as simular interest . And get to speak with different people often .The one who called me today to tell me about his other friends misfortune is a drummer and that is how I met him 3 years ago.

Changing ones surroundings.Re-arranging furniture, adding a painting to a room or changing one that is there with another can help stimulate the mind in a positive way. And it can take the mind off of unpleasant thoughts , that can make one feel depressed.

Going for a long walk. That singly with a diet that includes large amount of raw greens such as salad could greatly pull one quickly out of a depression. The walking is a great thing to do. If you think about it , half our body is legs. Yet everyone seems to take drives instead of taking long walks.I bet if you are depressed you don't take long walks. It also is exercise. Exercise produces a chemical in the brain , I think it's called endophines, I'm not sure if that's the name. Anyway that chemical is like a natural drug that keeps the mind content and also makes the body and mind feel good.I like walking often. It keeps me basically happy .

Quality calcium with magnesium supplements seem to help . A Calcium deficiency can cause anxiety. A quality supplement ( found in a health food store ) of calcium with magnesium make most even who are not depressed feel better .

A supplement called L-Tryptophane had wonderful affects on my friend , after her taking them for a month. It was out lawed in the U.S. for a while , but I was told it can now be bought here again without a prescription.

I will post latter about a place to buy Tryptophane over the internet if you are interested in it. And I will also post another web site when I find it. It's about a women whos life was really bad because of clinical depression and she found out about Trytophane and uses it and claims as long as she takes it she feels great and can fully function in her daily life . It is also a natural product so it doesn't have bad side affects , that some claim other anti- depressants have.

Feel better, and I don't mean to give more information than you asked for. One of my symtoms of MS is confussion. And sometimes I answer questains that I wasn't asked. And say ( write ) things that don't really matter ,Or make much sense. It doesn't bother me , but sometimes it annoys others

I currently have a small greenhouse and have been eating my own grown vegetables and my symtons are starting to lessen lately .

If I think of any thing else I'll post here. Perhaps others will read this and add waht they know. I'm very limited. I just like to offer what I have.

Steve

Steve,

I can see that you put a lot of time and effort into your response and I appreciate it. Would you mind if I would send my reply directly to your e-mail rather than posting it here?

< "Would you mind if I would send my reply directly to your e-mail rather than posting it here? " >

No I don't mind.

Sasha, let me fisrt figure out how to set up a hotmail account to recieve or exchange e-mail.

The one I use here is unreal as it says ,and won't get e-mail through to me.I use to use a real one but some people would send me e-mail that was negative ,once in a while. One had a virus attached.

I have recently had to reset this computor to get a virus out of it.I don't have virus protection on it and it's a timely process to clean it up while trying to save all my files and my favorites.I'm new at doing anything complicated on the computor as far as anything beyond posting at a forum or doing a search for information.

Since I don't know how I've been getting computor viruses once in a while, and believe it's been from exchanging e-mails ,I was told if I use something like a hotmail account this would give me virus protection from viruses that can be carried through e-mails.

I had about 4 viruses in the last couple of years. And once recieved conformation from someone I was corresponding with through e-mail that a virus I recieved was from them ,it wasn't their fault. But I lost a lot of valuable files and favorites, as my computor crashed and everything I had stored it it was gone foever.

----------------------------------------------------------

I am noticing that a lot of people are starting to become clinically depressed and a high percentage of the population are taking medications for depression. I believe it's starting to become an epidemic.Since a lot of people for some reason are embarrassed to admit they are depressed and being treated for it , it's also a keep in the closet or swept under the rug disease or ailment.

I live in a small rural community about 20 miles from town.Everyone knows each other and everyones buisness.I believe more than half of the people in the community would be considered ( diagnosed ) clinically depressed if they'd go see a doctor. One reason is they are isolationist. They don't like people from outside the community and stick to themselves. This leaves a lack of outside stimuli that the brain seems to need to function well just like the body needs minerals and vitamins to function well.

Another reason I believe a high percentage of people in the community are suffering from depression is diet. I been invited to Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners through out the years living here and all the vegetables at those dinners were from a can, mashed potatoes from a box and no fresh greens or vegetables.. I was serverd home baked country biscuits , is was a box of stuff you pop in the oven. After a few years here I've learned the whole community eats this way .About the only foods they may eat that are wholesome is wild game that some of the people hunt.

This past year three youngster have been put in incare Behavoir Centers( mental hospital ) for a 2 week stay ,all at different times but that seems to be a high percentage for such a small community. The 3 are currently on medication. One came over to visit , he is 17.He came to tell me he can't take all the crazy things going on around him. He's a minor I can't even suggest to him what he may try. The other is in his early 20's but he just thinks it's because he didn't obey God and is now preaching the bible to everyone. Because everyone can read the bible and have already heard what he's preaching , people avoid him ,even the people of the community who go to church 3 times a week and read from the bible almost every daily.I haven't been asked advice from him , so I won't give. People get highly defensive when you give them advice they didn't ask for.I guess I would also.

Almost very child in my small community is on Ritalin.

There are so many people on medication from being mildly depressed to manic depressed to diagnosed with ,I think it's called psychosis . Yet instead of the doctors trying to find what is causing the depression or mental illnesses, they just write a prescription for medication. I believe that psychiatrist get a cash incentive each time they prescribe medication for a new patient . I won't say for sure unless I can find the documentation to prove it but I remember ready it .

Some of the medications that are given are given without letting patients or their families know of the dangers and possibilities of permenant side affects from the medications .One that is called Tardive Dyskinsia is an involuntry muscle twitching , usually of the face muscles and causes involuntary movements of arms waving aroung and hands pointing at things ,and legs and feet that will move up and down when the person is just sitting and relaxing . I've seen this first hand and that's when I started researching why this happens to people on medication for depression. And found the medications can possibly cause a neurological disease worse than the depression itself. It's heart breaking stuff when you see it happen to someone you care about .

So when I see someone who's asking for advice on this subject ( depression ). I'll stop what ever I'm doing or need to get done and help in anyway I can.I don't expect anything in return from the one I could help. And actually one has to want to help themself , I could just possibly share information I've learned from seeing people go throuh depressoin .Actually I get back in return by being able to help someone .That's part of what keeps people healthy , helping out others. If the rest of the world would give a helping hand when they are able to, many of the worlds problems would cease to exist.

I used to hide my multiple sclorosis.I was to stubborn to admit I have something that may slow me down a bit .Almost no-one except close family members knew about it until recently.I couldn't find much information on it on the internet . Then I read on another forum that a women who had MS claimed she had a lot of the symtoms reversed . There are no medications to take for it and I wouldn't take them anyway if there were ..

I don't post on that forum for some reasons,so I never got to ask her what she did to reverse the symtoms.I did mention it on another forum and someone posted a web page with information I believe is going to be greatly helpful.

When I get that Hotmail account for e-mails ,I'll post here and you can contact me privately.

Sasha , I'm having second thoughts of corressponding through private e-mail. As I'm kind of untrusting when it comes to not knowing motives of people along with using these electronic devises ( computors ) to figure what motives are in the minds of ones I communicate with on a computor or even telephone.

I still depend on energy that emits off the person I deal with to feel comforatble to get into private communications with them. And can understand a person by feeling the enery of that person , better than understanding them through word communications with them.

And others who I've communicated with on forums or private e- mails ,without being able to feel their soul , has been complete failures.Unless they were people I've met first in person and latter on related through e-mails.

They know me and know how to take my words. I know them and know how to take their words.

I feel I may have misinterpreted peoples motives in using a computor to communicate with them. And I know people have misinterpreted my motives too often through failure of being able to feel what I was saying . It's even happened at this forum with the one who host it.

I'm not to well developed in expressing myself through words and am highly and often misinterpreted as mis represented through my written communications.

Hopefully you can say what you needed to say here.

I also have a forum set up that I don't use and no one comes there because I never made it known. I was going to use it for a forum of people I know personally ( live ) who I exchange e-mail with regularly but didn't have time to get into it.

If you interested I'll post the web address here.At that forum . because I am the one who put it together , you can send me an e-mail through there that I only can read , as you seemed to want to communicate your thoughts privately.

Some folks trust to reason others trust to might, I don't trust to nothin', but I know it comes out right.

Say it once again now, Whoa, I hope you'll understand When it's done and over, Lord, a man is just a man.

Playin', playin' in the band. Daybreak, daybreak on the land.

Some folks look for answers others look for fights, Some folks up in treetops just a looking for their kites.

Whoa, I can tell your future just look what's in your hand, But I can't stop for nothin' I'm just playing in the band.

Playin', playin' in the band. Daybreak, daybreak on the land.

Standin' on a tower world at my command You just keep a turnin' while I'm playing in the band.

And if a man among you got no sin upon his hand Let him cast a stone at me for playing in the band.

Playin', playin' in the band. Daybreak, daybreak on the land.

http://www.entheogen.com/OWSinterview.html

" Bears quote : Sasha is one of the most brilliant people I have ever met. I don't approve of the semi-fictionalization of the characters in his writing, as it is patently obvious who are the actors. But in his own way he too, is standing to be counted. "

Sasha ,is that you too man ! Wow , I didn't know you guys do the forum thing.

Who's Steve ? , I don't remember no Steve. From what he writes I'd say he must be one of your lost diciples Bear who didn't find his way home after one of those long trips on triple dose blue barrels.

Well it's good to see you all doing OK , I think ?

Yeah , Steve does sound like a

Lost Sailor

Compass card is spinning, helm is swinging to and fro Oh, where is the dog star, oh, where's the moon. You're a lost sailor, been away too long at sea.

Somedays the gales are howling, sometimes the sea is still as glass. Oh, raise the main sail, oh, lash the mast. You're a lost sailor, been away too long at sea. Now the shorelines beckon, there is a price for being free.

There's a sea bird cryin' and there's a ghost wind blowing And it's calling you, to that misty swirling sea. Till the chains of your dreams are broken, No place in this world you can be.

You're a lost sailor, been away too long at sea. Now the shorelines beckon, there is a price for being free.

You pay for being free, I'll tell ya freedom don't come easy, Free don't always come for free, Sometimes it's hard to know what to believe in.

Where to go, who to go, where to be, who to be. That means you're driftin'.... driftin' Yeah driftin' and dreamin', really goin' on a dream now. Really goin' on a feelin', really goin' on a feelin'. Driftin', driftin' and dreamin'.

Cause it's a place you've never been Maybe a place you've never seen now You can hear them callin' on the wind Driftin' and dreamin', driftin' and dreamin'. Really goin' on a dream now, really goin' on a dream now, Really goin' on a dream now.

Sasha , this book I mention here is a good book on diet that has help me when I got run down from MS symptoms while working night shifts in a factory and doing to much over time hours..

I have other books that I used in conjunction with this one but I believe I will be moving from where I live soon and had a lot of my possesions stored in another state . I am most likely going to be unpluggin the compurtor I use and this will also be brought to my place of storage by family memembers so my moving won't be over whelming by having to move everything I own at once.I have to move my goats , so this in itself might be an arm full.

Sorry I couldn't help more. I don't know too much. But search around and think positive and you'll will find what you need. The impossible , is just something that hasn't happened yet.Believe this ,and anything is possible.

The book is : Healthy Healing

LindaG.Rector-Page, N.D. , Ph. D.

Here is a forum that has a large membership and is highly active. It has some who may be able to give you advice from first hand expeience .

http://www.homesteadingtoday.com/

Sorry about not wanting to correspond in private.I don't trust people until they've given me a reason to do so.And I don't know who you are or know if you are for real with needing help or part of a joke being played on me.Take - care and get better.

-- Steve (un@home.com), February 13, 2003.

The book also mentions specific ailments ,Depression being one listed. And vitamin , herbal and food therapies to heal naturally. It's a good book and worth the investment.

A web page that relates to the disease Multiple Sclorosis , and how dietary factors can contribute to this diseases symptoms. This was posted on another forum by a person claiming to be from the UK and living on a island off of Japan .It was directed at me and my mentioning of MS on that forum.

It's used here as an example of diet affecting diseases. I don't know if the information included hold true. I do know that I can't eat conventionally grown foods from the store without feeling my symptoms flair up and become active.

Steve,

No apologies needed about not being comfortable corresponding privately. I understand completely.

Yes, I'm interested in the website you mentioned. You did say that you are the ONLY one who has access to that, correct?

ThankYou

I posted this on another thread here on Freedom self reliance and will post it on this thread also ,for obvious reasons.

The problem with asking a questain here like the one you have asked is, nobody here is a trained professional. And someone answering your questain might prevent you from seeking professional help. You may have an ailment that has organic causes which is a physical ailment .You may have one that is psychologically caused which is a mental ailment or ailment of the mind. And only a professional physician can evaluate a health condition and can make a proper diagnosis of what is ailing a person.

It is not only illegal for someone to suggest something that may be seen as medical advice or a substitute for medicine it could be dangerous to someones health to take advice from someone without a sound medical background.

I've seen diet help people when medicines along with the lattest medical information and treatment did nothing except create new illnesses as a result of side affects from the medicines. So it is important to find a doctor who takes his work and the health of his patients seriously , and has an opened mind to the root causes of ailments in conjuntion with conventional medicine.

I won't suggest anything to anyone who has a medical problem except find a physician who is trained in conventional and open to natural medicines.Who has sincere concerns for his patients And is aware of the affects of food allergies ,like grains , even organically grown ones and the affects food and diet can have as the possible unlining afects of ones ailments..

Every person reacts different to different foods. Iodine rich foods like shrimp or lobster can make people very ill as I saw two weeks ago in a person who knew he was allergic to shrimp and didn't know what lobster was and ate some. His throat and lips swelled up like he was being inflated like a ballon .I can eat the stuff and actually crave to have it in my diet to feel good .

One needs to be properly diagnosed before attempting to be healed whether by a doctor Or in my case, where I'm learning to heal myself , because there is little a dotor can do for me and no medicines were suggested except pain killers , which I don't take unless I break some bones, which I do on occasion. So I'm left to heal myself or sit back and do nothing and let a disease control my life.I choose to heal myself, or at least try .

I will share with anyone who ask me , what I'm doing for myself and how I'm getting positive results in treating my illness.

A good physician can be well trusted. And that is being said by someone who often questains others motives ( peoples' trusts" ) as well as my own.
