How should we handle Snorkel?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

As always, there is a raging debate among OKers regarding the best way to handle the Snorkel conundrum.

There are some who have expressed concerns that the "heavy-handed" approach employed towards Snorkel's training in the past hasn't worked, and that it is time for a new approach. They say that Snorkel responds best to "positive reinforcement". The proponents of this camp feel that the most effective way to get Snorkel in shape is to provide him with many convenient training opportunities and to foster a sense of "excitement" in Snorkel for the upcoming relay season.

The hard-liners maintain that you can't turn your back on Snorkel for a second, for if you give him and inch, he'll take a mile. Theirs is the "boot camp" approach. They believe that the "nice guys" are just wishful thinkers and that Snorkel has responded well when kept on a short leash.

What do you think?
