Just a fiction based on a concept he discuesss in his essay "The Philosophy of Composition" which is a bit tongue in cheek and untrustworthy. Not being able to get over or be comforted with the memory or afterlife of a lost beloved is Poe's inspirational trap. The Raven is a way for him to get out his self-destructive obsession and spiral down to despair. He calls it an emblem of mournful and never-ending remembrance. besides the owl and the parrot had been done. Some clues in the poem seem to indicate he had considered using the owl.

Addressed to no real person in particular, but derived from his own several experiences of loss.
