Pick-up trucks?greenspun.com : LUSENET : zipcar : One Thread |
When I joined Zipcar, over a year and a half ago, there was talk of adding pick-up trucks to the fleet, so that we would be able to transport larger building materials or furniture. When might we see a pick-up truck or two (or three) added?
Thanks,
Marc

Marc, We continue to go 'round on this. Every one thinks it's a good idea until we start to actually talk to folks about taking Gwen or Brook away and then putting a pickup truck there. Then everyone changes their minds thinking they don't want to drive a pickup all the time. And no one knows who is going to drive it Monday through Friday, which makes us nervous. So we've chickened out for the time being.Mark

Hi Mark,Why would you have to replace an existing car, to evaluate the public response to a pick-up truck?
Surely there are plenty of possibilities for adding one more vehicle somewhere, or else Zipcar would not have grown to over 100 cars this quickly.
If you added a pick-up truck *anywhere* where it would take less than 45 minutes to travel to it via the T, I would choose to use it, rather than stick 2 x 4's out the back of a station wagon.
I would also be more likely to use it Mon - Fri, than on weekends.
Thanks,
Marc

As an MIT student, I would also be willing to travel on the T to get to a pickup/SUV for furniture runs. There must be a lot of student zipcar people in this situation!

I too feel that a small pick-up is truly missing from the Zip fleet. I am in NYC and would also travel to get a truck when needed. Thanks just my two cents

Ditto - a truck available anywhere near a T-stop would get booked. I don't know how you'd cost it for wear-n-tear - considering that, as a pick-up, it's gonna get *some* abuse just from carrying cargo in the bed. For now though, the new Element is a welcome addition.

As a member since 2000, I would have rented a ZipPickup several times if available. I have taken advantage of the trucks from Home Depot, and station wagons, but a Zip Pickup, something like a Tacoma Double Cab or Xtra Cab, would be really ideal. Maybe the Watertown or South Boston Dealers would be interested, since they have been doing 2 vehicles.
