Poe seems to have a duality, a puzzle of contradictions in himself. This puzzle carries over to the question of HOW his life is reflected in his works and cannot be easy to answer without getting a good grasp on Poe and his art. It is not what an easy reading would assume.

The nature of his Muse("Alone" and how it develops particularly in realtionship with women "To Helen" "Lenore" "The Raven" "Annabel Lee") is best seen in his best poems but those are brief and symbolic, not very intimate in biographical detail. His difficulties in life moved that first tragic Muse fatalistically along a path that he never wanted to be so unhappy. That center was where his Muse was though and THAT neither love nore death could sway him from no matter the burdens attached by defeats, losses, and oppressive memories.
