My fiance and I are both Catholic. He was married previously in a Greek Orthodox Church. Is an annulment required?

My fiance was previously married in a Greek Orthodox Church. He is now divorced, but we agree that the annulment process may be too painful to endure during this otherwise happy and joyous time. Do you know if a Greek Orthodox marriage is "valid" in the Roman Catholic Church? My understanding is that invalid marriages do not need to be annuled. Can anyone shed any light? I am trying to plan a wedding and this issue is a major stumbling block!

Kirsten, if you are planning a wedding in church you must anyway go to the local pastor. Do it. And yes a Greek orthodox marriage is valid in the eyes of our church. And no, it doesn't mean your fiance cannot marry you in our church. You just mix your poor knowledge in one soup... I don't want to ask you questions here because that will just give me work which your local pastor need to do anyway. As I say to all of you - go to the pastor, don't be affraid, he will tell you after asking the right questions!
